During my visit to Burkina Faso I had an opportunity to visit the Folk Instrument Museum in Ouagadougou. Though many of the drums shared the common traits of the Malian Empire, this country has a gourd drum called the Bendere which is goat hide stretched over a large calabash gourd. They have a tar-like dot on the head of the drum that makes the skin vibrate slowly, giving it a deep bass tone. See live performance of this drum below from my trip.
